How do I change my cell phone number?

I was given a cell phone for Christmas, which I really appreciate, and recently it's gotten busted in the wash so I got a new one yesterday. The phone broke but I still have the same sim card, which means I have the same number and data and stuff. However, the new phone came with a new sim card. If I install the new sim card, will I have a new number? I'm wondering because the phone was bought in DC but I live in Maryland, so the area code is different. If I take out my current card, will my plan stay the same with the new one? Will I damage the new card or the old one if I take them out? How will this affect my plan? Is there a way for me to keep the old sim card and change the number? Does it cost money? How much? How do I change my cell phone number?
You're going to have the same number. if u got a sim card from your phone company they should've transfered the number to that sim card
